What is JSON Validation?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) validation is the process of checking whether JSON data conforms to the standard syntax rules. JSON is the most widely used data interchange format for web APIs, configuration files, and data storage. Even a minor syntax error can cause parsing failures, so verifying JSON validity before use is an essential step in development. This tool checks the syntax of your input and, if errors are found, reports their exact location and cause. In practice, a single misplaced comma or a missing double quote can cause an entire API request to fail or an application to crash at runtime. Validating JSON before sending or storing it prevents these issues and dramatically cuts the time spent diagnosing errors. Because all validation runs entirely in your browser, you can safely check even confidential or sensitive data without any privacy concerns.

How It Works

The JSON Validator leverages the JavaScript engine's built-in JSON.parse() method to parse the input text. When parsing fails, the tool analyzes the error message returned by the browser to extract the exact line number and column position of the problem. On successful parsing, it recursively traverses the object tree to compute structure statistics including maximum nesting depth, total key count, array count, and object count. These metrics provide a quick overview of the data's complexity. The formatting feature passes an indentation value to JSON.stringify() for pretty output, while the minify feature removes all indentation to produce the smallest possible string. File drag-and-drop uses the File API and FileReader to load local files, and no data leaves your browser at any point during the process.
