QR Code Tips
- Higher error correction levels allow QR codes to be read even when partially damaged.
- Ensure sufficient contrast between foreground and background colors for better recognition.
- Wi-Fi QR codes can be scanned by smartphones to connect automatically.
What is a QR Code Generator?
A QR code generator converts URLs, text, phone numbers, email addresses, and WiFi credentials into scannable QR code images. The generated codes can be used on business cards, posters, product packaging, storefronts, and much more. You can download them in PNG or SVG format, and customize size, colors, module shape, and error correction level to create QR codes that are perfectly suited to your needs.
How It Works
The QR code generator encodes input data into a 2D matrix following QR code symbology (ISO/IEC 18004). Data is converted to a bit stream, Reed-Solomon error correction codes are added, then placed in the matrix with finder, timing, and alignment patterns. Mask patterns are applied to optimize readability.
How to Use This Generator
- Pick a data type using the buttons at the top of the tool:
URL,Text,Phone,Email, orWi-Fi. The input form below changes to match your choice. - Fill in the fields. A Wi-Fi code needs the network name (SSID), the password, and the encryption type (WPA/WPA2, WEP, or No Password). An email code can optionally pre-fill a subject line and message body, so the person scanning gets a ready-to-send draft.
- Open the Style Options area to choose a module shape -- Square, Rounded, Dots, or Classy -- and a corner style. These change the look without affecting the encoded data.
- Set the size (150 to 512 pixels), margin, and error correction level (L, M, Q, or H). You can also recolor the foreground dots and background, either with the color picker or by typing a hex value directly.
- Press the Generate button, or simply hit Enter in the input field. The preview panel on the right updates immediately, and the Encoded Data box below it shows the exact string stored in the code.
- Test the preview with your phone camera, then save the result with Download PNG for everyday sharing or Download SVG for print work.
Where QR Codes Work Best
Restaurants and cafes lean on QR menus because updating a web page is far cheaper than reprinting laminated menus. Since table-top codes get splashed and scratched, generate them at error correction level H (30%) and print each code at least 2 cm wide so phones can lock onto it under dim lighting.
Guest Wi-Fi is another everyday win. A Wi-Fi type code taped near the entrance of an office, rental apartment, or coffee shop lets visitors join the network with one camera scan instead of typing a long password. Just remember the code stores the credentials at generation time -- change the password and you need a fresh code.
For event check-in posters, size matters more than style. A common rule of thumb is that a QR code should be about one tenth of the expected scanning distance: if attendees will scan from a meter away, print the code around 10 cm per side. Choose the SVG download for posters and banners, because vector output keeps perfectly clean edges at any print size, while a small PNG will blur when enlarged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my data leave the browser?
No. Generation happens entirely on your device using client-side JavaScript. URLs, phone numbers, and Wi-Fi passwords are never uploaded to a server, which makes the tool safe even for sensitive credentials.
Which error correction level should I pick?
Higher levels let a scanner recover the code even when part of it is dirty, torn, or covered, at the cost of a denser pattern. M (15%) is a sensible default for screens, while Q (25%) or H (30%) is better for stickers, outdoor signage, and anything people will touch. If you are encoding a very long URL, dropping to L (7%) keeps the modules larger and easier to scan.
Can I put a logo in the middle of the code?
Usually yes, as long as you generate the code at level H first. The 30% redundancy means a modest center overlay still scans, but keep the logo under roughly a fifth of the total area and never cover the three large finder squares in the corners. Always test on a couple of different phones after adding an overlay.
Will the QR code ever expire?
Codes made here are static: the data lives inside the image itself, so the code keeps working forever with no subscription or service behind it. The only thing that can break is the destination -- if the linked page goes offline, the scan still succeeds but the visit fails. Dynamic QR services work differently: they route through a redirect server so the target can be edited later, but the code dies if that service shuts down.
My custom colors will not scan. What went wrong?
Scanners expect dark modules on a light background. Two common mistakes are choosing colors that are too close in brightness and inverting the scheme entirely (light dots on a dark background). Keep strong light-dark contrast and leave the background lighter than the foreground.
Is there a limit to how much text a QR code can hold?
A single QR code can technically store up to a few thousand characters, but capacity shrinks as the error correction level rises, and dense codes become hard for cameras to read. For anything longer than a short paragraph, host the content on a web page and encode the URL instead.
PNG or SVG -- which download should I use?
PNG is the safe choice for chat apps, documents, and websites because everything can display it. SVG is a vector format that scales infinitely, so it is the right pick for print shops, banners, and design files in Illustrator or Figma.
