What is Color Palette Extractor?

Color Palette Extractor analyzes uploaded images and automatically identifies the dominant colors, presenting them as HEX and RGB codes you can copy and use. Instead of manually eyedropping colors one at a time, upload any photo or illustration and extract 3 to 10 key colors in a single step. The tool uses the Median Cut algorithm to find the most representative colors in your image, making it useful for setting up website color schemes, documenting brand guidelines, matching social media design palettes, and finding color inspiration from any visual source.

User Guide

  1. Click the upload area or drag and drop an image file onto it.
  2. Once the image loads, dominant colors are extracted automatically.
  3. Move the color count slider to adjust how many colors to extract (3 to 10).
  4. Hover over any extracted color to see its HEX and RGB values.
  5. Click a color swatch to copy the HEX code to your clipboard.
  6. Paste the copied codes into your CSS files, Figma projects, Photoshop, or any other tool.

Common Questions

Q: What image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and most browser-displayable image formats are supported. SVG files are vector-based and may not produce accurate color extraction results.

Q: What algorithm is used for extraction?

The tool uses the Color Thief library with the Median Cut algorithm. This algorithm analyzes all pixels in the image across the color space and groups them to find the most representative dominant colors.

Q: Can I see RGB codes as well?

Yes, hover over any extracted color swatch to see both its HEX code and RGB values displayed. Clicking copies the HEX code to your clipboard.

Q: What is the maximum number of colors I can extract?

You can extract between 3 and 10 colors using the slider. For images with lots of color variety, 7 to 10 works well. For simpler images, 3 to 5 is usually enough to capture the key colors.

Q: The extracted colors do not match what I expected. What can I do?

Large background areas tend to dominate the extraction. If you want colors from a specific region, crop the image to that area before uploading. Increasing the color count also helps capture more subtle colors.

Q: Is there a file size limit?

There is no strict size limit since processing happens in your browser. However, very large files (over 10MB) may take longer to analyze. Standard photo sizes process without any noticeable delay.

Q: Can I export all colors at once?

Currently, colors are copied individually by clicking each swatch. If you need multiple colors, click them in sequence and paste into a text editor or your code file.

Q: Are uploaded images stored on a server?

No. All image analysis is performed entirely in your browser. No image data is transmitted to or stored on any external server, so you can safely use personal or confidential images.
